When you travel the world, you get to try a lot of new things, most you wouldn’t ever get to do at home. It’s part of the allure of seeing what’s beyond your backyard. Being able to literally put your hands on history is an incredible and life changing experience. But while being a tourist in another country is amazing, it also misses something. What it’s like to live there, do everyday tasks and be a part of the routine.
One of my favorite shows on TV is The Amazing Race.

It combines two of my favorite things, reality TV and of course, travel! Every time I watch it, I discover new places I want to see, different things I want to do! But probably one of the most appealing aspects of the show, the part that makes me really want to compete on it myself, is how much they get to do that the average tourist would normally not have access to.

Become a barmaid and serve beer at Oktoberfest? They’ve done that. Be a contestant on a Japenese game show? They’ve done that. Work with African tribes to learn their way of life, building huts and learning traditional hunting ceremonies? They’ve done that, too. It’s a smorgasbord of interesting and unique challenges that give you a taste of what it’s like to be a part of whichever culture you’re in.

Now obviously, when you’re racing for a million dollars and other prizes, you’re moving through these tasks at breakneck speed and you might not get to truly enjoy them. And a lot of people say, “Well you probably wouldn’t really get to see or experience the country.” I’m sure that’s true. But I think it would be worth it to get to try things most people never get to experience.

One day I would absolutely love to be able to compete on this show. I think it’s something I’d be really good at, and it would be a truly different and fascinating way to see the world. And of course, it’s a great way to plan my next trip!

  1. Whenever I think “Amazing Race”, I think of 30 Rock and Liz’s neighbor that she turned in to Homeland Security. 🙂 I would totally watch you on that show!
